Does this sound familiar

  • You start the day full of good intentions, and then your best client rings up and wants you to deliver a new product as soon as possible and can you sort it now!
  • You come into work with your mental to do list, and by 9.30 this has gone out of the window
  • Your day has just been sabotaged by staff who are not performing and you have to go and sort it out yourself
  • You fully intended to spend time on the business today, not in it, and planned to call up the 5 sales leads you have been passed, but somehow, the day just got away from you

We all face challenges like this. Here are some ways you can overcome this

  1. Use your own time more effectively. How? By planning it and putting it into chunks of time which are achievable. A great book I have found that explains this more is the Pomodoro Technique http://pomodorotechnique.com/
  2. Delegate more – one of the biggest challenges for any business owner is to delegate. Check out the One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard for tips on how to delegate, give praise and give reprimands. Manage your team, and don’t be managed by them
  3. Be accountable to someone else but yourself! We can all kid ourselves that there were many valid reason why this didn’t happen today, or that was just not possible, but when you have to be accountable to someone else, then you take a different view. Find another business owner, or perhaps your other half, and arrange a time for a short accountability call every week.

The old saying time is a resource which we spend but cannot buy is so true – so make the most of it and improve the quality of your life.
